One for the Boys

By Suzanne Scott

Not wanting to be outdone by the ladies, Topman has invited a selection of designers to offer their interpretation of “The White Shirt”. On sale in-store and online now are pieces by Richard Nicoll, Ute Ploier, Deryck Walker, Siv Stoldal and Carola Euler. The timing of the re-design of this timeless wardrobe staple could not be more fitting, with the white shirt having taken centre stage at the autumn/winter 07/08 menswear shows. Dolce & Gabbana and Versace have kept the shirt in familiar territory with metallic pewter special agent suits and the ever classic and equally sophisticated tux. Whilst Burberry Prorsum and Ralph Lauren have kept to their routes and see the white shirt teamed with soft knits, denim and old school blazers.

The designers take on the shirt shows no less ingenuity as the white shirt is recreated with an infusion of their own signature style:

Ute Ploier is channelling the ‘Hells Angels’ with this leather biker jacket inspired shirt with an up-turned round-neck collar, rigid waistband and squared-off shoulder-pad pattern.
