The revival of plastic shoes
Making my way back home on the tube a couple of days ago, my eyes got caught by a girl’s pair of shoes sitting at the other end of the carriage. After having noticed them I couldn’t help but checking the clothes she was wearing. I guess I was looking for any clues that would have helped me understand the need for her to wear such shoes… Much to my surprise I could not find any!
She must simply have liked them and wanted to wear them that day! The reason I got so fascinated by this pair of shoes is because I used to have a similar pair myself when I was 5 years old and would make sure I would only wear them when I had no other choice! I am talking about those plastic shoes or jelly shoes that you would wear on pebbly beaches - you know the types of shoes that make you look silly when you are only wearing a bathing suit!
Anyway there she was on the tube (wearing more than a bathing suit) with a pair of denim, a pink shirt and these transparent jelly shoes! Passed the surprise effects, I actually wondered: are these going to be the new flip flops which have become so fashionable in the last 5 years or so?
Very popular 20 years ago, it could indeed be happening since the 80’s styles have been revived themselves! Admittedly the Jelly shoes type still remain relatively rare on the tube, however plastic sandals have certainly been more popular and can be spotted on various shoe shop’s windows for cheap (you could get a pair for less than a £10!)
